I've been embarrassed when traveling overseas before because I had to borrow other people's phones. The last time I traveled I used a Roam4Less world travel phone. It kept me connected throughout Europe and Asia.

What are the hidden charges and how does billing work?
Roam4Less is a pre-paid service. You need to purchase airtime in advance and every call is debited from your account balance. There are no hidden charges, contracts, or monthly fees. The only price you pay is the cost per minute as posted on our site.
For Example: 10-minute phone calls from London to New York
- Total cost is 10x $.38 or $3.80
- That's it! No other charges
Things to keep in mind when comparing rates to other providers and local SIM cards:
Roam4Less™ Scorecard
FEE TYPE
OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS
ROAM4LESS™
» AIRTIME EXPIRATION DATE
Many service providers will require the customer to pre purchase a block of airtime that has a set expiry date such as 90 days. Once the airtime expires it can no longer be used and sometimes the SIM card as well is deactivated. So in essence your actual cost-per-minute would be total airtime purchase/airtime usage. This is particularly common when purchasing "local SIM cards".
Roam4Less™ Airtime remains active for 6 months after the last phone call
» CONNECTION FEES
Many service providers will charge a fixed connection fee for every phone call regardless of length in addition to any airtime usage charge. Since many phone calls are 1-2 minutes long the end result is a significant increase in your actual cost per minute.
None
» MONTHLY FEES
Some service providers will charge a monthly system access fee that can end up being very costly if the SIM card is not used for several months.
None
» FREE INCOMING COMPENSATION BY VERY HIGH OUTBOUND
Some service providers, particularly in Europe will offer "free roaming" in many countries. In actuality, what this means is that there is no charge for incoming calls but a steep premium on outgoing calls. Therefore the amount saved on incoming is diminished by the cost of making outgoing calls.
Prices are more balanced to avoid costly outbound
» LONG DISTANCE
When purchasing a local SIM card you will be able to significantly reduce your roaming costs but you will be charged long distance surcharges to calls made out of the country (such as when calling back to the office/home). In some cases you will even be charged LD for calls made out of the immediate calling area.
No Long Distance! Total cost is included in cost per minute
» "PREMIUM" INTERNATIONAL NUMBERS
Most global SIM card providers will offer a world SIM card that has a premium number from various European countries such as Estonia, Lichtenstein and several others. These numbers are very expensive to call to sometimes costing more than $2.00 a minute. So while you might be saving on the roaming costs they are actually being paid by the caller. So for example when returning from a trip abroad, you'll be smiling at the reduced cell phone bill, only to receive a large Long distance bill on the corporate account from all your employees that called you from the office while you were traveling and a another large Long distance bill at home (that can't be expensed) from all the long phone calls you had with family while traveling with a "cost saving" world phone.
Some companies will offer the option of adding a toll free number or a US phone number to your SIM card. They will in most cases charge a monthly fee for the additional number as well as a per minute surcharge that will raise your cost per minute significantly and certainly erase any "free incoming" that was offered.
Choose your own phone number from anywhere in US and Canada at no extra cost!

Why are roaming charges so high?
A:
There are two basic reasons:
1. When you make a call, you are charged for by the local carrier as well as your own. For example, calls made from a Canadian mobile phone in France, will incur charges from their Canadian carrier as well as the local French carrier.
2. Both the host carrier and your own carrier don't feel the need to offer competitive rates because you are, in essence, a captive market!
